Wet Feet

This scene is at the very heart of the Fourth Gospel. In the symbolic action of washing His disciples’ feet, Jesus points to His coming death on Calvary as the supreme revelation of God’s love. To catch the extraordinary revelation of “God at our feet” in this gesture, it is important to remember the seemingly nonchalant words John uses to set the scene. He reminds us that not only Jesus is God, from God and is returning to God and has ‘all things in His hands, that the events of Calvary are a part of a wider cosmic conflict between good and evil, and yet the ones whose heart has been touched by Satan, also has his feet washed by God.
